St Mark’s is delighted to share that we have been awarded the Royal College of Physicians’ Excellence in Patient Care Award for our work on the DISCARD3 study, a collaboration between St Mark’s Hospital and the NHSE Optical Diagnosis Implementation team.
The Discard research study showed that optical diagnosis of diminutive polyps with a “resect and discard” strategy is a greener, leaner, more efficient and cost-effective way to perform colonoscopy and is both safe and acceptable for patients and clinicians. The findings have now been adopted nationally in the English Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. This provides time and financial savings by not having to use histopathology for diagnosis.
This is a tremendous achievement for the entire team at St Mark’s Hospital as well as our Trust for supporting this important work — from the initial idea, followed by the original DISCARD study right through to DISCARD3. It’s a true testament to the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved.
